Strategic simulation of a financial cooperative

Developing a strategic vision for managing a financial cooperative

IICADD develops simulations for the strategic and operational management of financial cooperatives. As one example, the Str@tégiCA simulation was developed for the Groupe Crédit Agricole in partnership with the (IFCAM). Designed to incorporate the specific characteristics of a Groupe Crédit Agricole regional credit union and its market, Str@tégiCA can also be used in a generic manner.

Objectives of the simulation

  • Develop a strategic vision for managing a financial cooperative.
  • Understand the requirements and challenges of managing a cooperative in a highly competitive environment.
  • Discover the contributions and interdependencies of the cooperative’s main functions (human resources, marketing, finance, information technology, etc.).
  • Practise the role of manager and leader by making decisions and understanding their implications.
  • Realize that managing a cooperative is a matter of internal, external, and temporal consistency.
  • Refine your understanding of how a diverse management team works…under stress.
  • Take a step back from your own experience as a manager and develop strategic thinking.

An interactive online tool

Participants, organizedImage Stratégica into management committees of four to five people, manage their cooperative (a regional bank in the case of the Groupe Crédit Agricole) under fictitious but realistic conditions. They thus take control of all the organization’s strategic functions :

  • A simplified but realistic starting situation of the cooperative and its socioeconomic environment (data from their regional bank in the case of participants from the same Groupe Crédit Agricole bank).
  • Same competition and socioeconomic environment for all management committees.
  • Participants manage the cooperative over 4 to 6 periods corresponding to 4 to 6 years.
  • Decision grid for each period to implement the strategy.
  • Simulation can generate forecasts and verify internal consistency.
  • Realistic year-end results (dashboard, financial statements, and economic data), consistent with teaching objectives.

Teaching method

  1. Diagnose the financial cooperative: internal analysis (financial statements and dashboard) and external analysis (comparative performance and socioeconomic statistics).
  2. Develop a strategy and objectives for the duration of the simulation (4 to 6 years).
  3. Make decisions regarding resource allocation for all major management functions: products, marketing, sales, distribution, human resources, technological resources, risk management, financial management (including liquidity and capital), and social and mutual responsibility.
  4. Conduct forecasting to verify internal consistency and modify decisions as needed.
  5. Make final resource allocation decisions.
  6. Execute the simulation and generate results for the year.
  7. Analyze results and update the strategy based on the results obtained.
  8. Repeat steps 3 to 7 depending on the duration of the simulation (4 to 6 years).
  9. At the end of the last year, each Management Committee gives a final presentation on the alignment between their strategy and the results obtained.
